According to the Canucks, details of a partnership with the city of Abbotsford are being finalized and the move will be submitted for approval to the AHL Board of Governors on May 6.
The planned home of the Canucks’ new AHL affiliate is the Abbotsford Center. The team would have a new name, brand and logo and would play in the AHL Pacific Division. Further details and public comment await the completion of the partnership agreement and approval by AHL’s board of directors.
“As the momentum begins to take shape, we are pleased to confirm our goal of bringing our AHL franchise and our Canucks hopes home to the city of Abbotsford,” said Francesco Aquilini, president, Canucks Sports & Entertainment. “The move would provide significant opportunities for both our team and the community and would open a new chapter, bringing Canucks hockey to even more fans in the Lower Mainland.
The AC has previously hosted the Abbotsford Heat, the Calgary Flames AHL club, for five seasons. The club left Abbotsford after the 2013-14 season.
