Upcoming World Kayaking Events in Columbus and Phenix City
COLOMB, Georgia (WRBL)– Columbus and Phenix City will host the 2022 World Cup kayaking events and the 2023 World Championship.
Mayor Eddie Lowe of Phenix City and Mayor Skip Henderson of Columbus have joined Uptown Columbus, Inc., to announce that the area has been selected to host the 2022 World Cup kayaking competition in October 2022.
The region will also host the World Championship in June 2023.
The competitions will be held on the Chattahoochee River in Uptown Columbus.
Mayor Eddie Lowe told News 3 that partnerships create championships.
“Skip Henderson and I always talk about the fact that we are truly one region and that confirms exactly that we are one region. I’m so grateful to be a part of something so amazing and awesome, that through our partnerships we’ve been able to make it happen, ”said Lowe.
The competitions are sanctioned by the International Canoe Federation (ICF), based in Lausanne, Switzerland. The governing body in the United States is the American Canoe Federation and they are located in Fredericksburg, Virginia.
The World Cup will also feature two separate competitions on different parts of the river. The first Cup will begin October 3-5, 2022 and the second will take place October 7-9, 2022. Cat Hardman, a student at Columbus State University, hopes to compete in 2022 and 2023 to represent the US teams.
“It makes me amazing to be honest. To go somewhere that I’m not really from and build a great community and just compete and show the city where I say I’m from now, ”Hardman said.
Hardman told News 3 it has always been a dream of his.
“Growing up my goal was to win the world championships, I haven’t done that yet, but now I live where the world is going to be. So now my goal is to win the Worlds in 2022 and 2023, ”said Hardman.
The World Championship is scheduled for June 27 to July 1, 2023. This is the ninth time that the World Championship will be held and the first time it will be held in the United States since 2013. Columbus and Phenix City will follow the planned competition. for next year in Nottingham, England.
The world championship is expected to attract more than 300 competitors from more than 30 countries. Uptown Columbus will create and convene a host committee to plan and direct the competitions. Uptown is also planning to organize fundraising campaigns to cover the production costs of all events. Volunteers will also be needed and Uptown Columbus will advertise future positions in 2022.
