Sunshine Coast Council
The Sunshine Coast Council welcomed the announcement by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) tonight that Brisbane has secured the rights to host the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
The Sunshine Coast will play a pivotal role in Brisbane 2032 and will be home to four key venues and several sporting events during the Olympics, including football, basketball, marathon, mountain biking, cycling and kitesurfing.
The Sunshine Coast will also host several days of road events (marathon and road cycling) during the 2032 Paralympic Games.
Community members from across the Sunshine Coast celebrated the announcement live from Tokyo at the Kings Beach Amphitheater, at the Olympics live presented by Westpac and hosted by the council.
Sunshine Coast Council Mayor Mark Jamieson said the IOC’s announcement and awarding of the 2032 Games to Brisbane was the result of more than six years of hard work by all levels of government.
Mayor Jamieson was the first person to meet IOC President Thomas Bach in Sydney on April 30, 2015 to discuss the potential of a SEQ Games proposal under the IOC’s New Norm model.
“Today is a historic day not only for our Sunshine Coast, but also for Brisbane and Queensland,” said Mayor Jamieson.
“Since Sydney 2000, our country has not hosted the biggest sporting event in the world.
“This is a unique opportunity for Brisbane and for our Sunshine Coast.
“I am extremely proud and humbled that the proposals first developed by the mayors of South East Queensland in 2015 have come to fruition.
“But now the real work begins.
“The world is coming to our community.
“Today’s decision sets in motion extensive detailed planning for the staging of the Games and supports the quality of life and connectivity in South East Queensland, which is one of Australia’s growing regions. the fastest.
“Our key approach since day one in 2015 – and one that has never changed – has been to secure the investment needed to support communities in South East Queensland, including our Sunshine Coast, as they continue. to grow.
“All partners recognized that hosting the Games should provide a legacy 10 years before and 10 years after Games events.
“The positive impact these Games will have on our community will be unparalleled and I encourage everyone to support Brisbane 2032.”
The four sites offered on the Sunshine Coast include:
City of Kawana, including Sunshine Coast Stadium (football preliminaries) and the Sunshine Coast Indoor Sports Center project (basketball preliminaries) – noting that further investigations into a possible location in downtown Maroochydore for the center covered sports have yet to be undertaken
Alexandra Headland which will be the staging area for the road events (Olympic cycling, marathon and walking, as well as cycling and the Paralympic marathon) and will host the kitesurf (sailing) competition
Sunshine Coast Mountain Bike Center in Parklands (Olympic Mountain Bike Competition)
Sunshine Coast Olympic Village which will be located in the heart of new downtown Maroochydore.
In addition to the sites built, the Sunshine Coast is proposed as a host site for cycling (road, time trial and Paralympic disciplines); marathon (walking, running and Paralympic disciplines); and kitesurfing – which will provide an exceptional opportunity to present the natural beauty and attractions of our coastline and hinterland to a global audience.
An independent economy Evaluation by KPMG, commissioned by the Queensland government, said the Games will bring a total profit of $ 8.1 billion for Queensland and $ 17.61 billion for Australia.
The report also found that the Games would create 91,600 full-time equivalent jobs for Queensland.
The game proposition will evolve over the next 11 years. To view Brisbane 2032 virtual tour Click here.
