Mid-American Canoe & Kayak Race returns to Fox Valley in June – Shaw Local
The Mid-American Canoe and Kayak Race returns to Fox River on Sunday, June 5, for the first time in five years.
According to a Fox Valley Park District press release, the race was last held in 2017. The previous four races were canceled due to unsafe water levels and flows on the Fox River (2018, 2019 ) and concerns related to the pandemic (2020 , 2021).
“We are committed to getting these boats back in the water,” said JD Ostergaard, facilities manager at the Prisco Community Center and 2022 race coordinator. “No matter the circumstances, canceling an event is always the last resort, and c “is demoralizing to the organizers who understand the special meaning that Mid-Am holds for many families in the community and beyond. The tradition of the race and its importance to so many naturally motivates us to offer another day on the water.
This year’s race offers two race lengths. Paddlers can choose from start lines in St. Charles (10 miles) or Batavia (6 miles), both ending with a post-race lunch celebration at Prisco Community Center/McCullough Park in Aurora.
Registration and canoe/kayak rental must be completed online. Race pack pickup will be from 5-8 p.m. Friday, June 3 at the Prisco Community Center. There are 10 canoe divisions and eight kayak divisions, as well as a non-competitive recreational category. The top three boats in each division receive a prize.
“There are options for anyone who wants to participate in this community event,” Ostergaard said.
“We saw the full range of runners,” he said. “Certainly we will have the super competitive group chasing those personal best times, but we will also see families doing a themed paddle… right down to decorating their boats. It’s just a really fun way to spend a summer morning. The Mid-Am tradition spans generations.
